I have just returned from a short holiday in Andalusia. It is always surprising to me, how much Roman heritage can be found throughout Europe.

One thing that struck me was a stretch of Roman road in Andalusia that I stumbled across, when looking for things to do on a day trip to the Sierra de Grazalema.

It is a stretch of about 3 kilometers, where a Roman road survived as a rural track. The signposted walk along this Roman road runs between the small white villages of Benaocaz and Ubrique.

The road is in a good state of conservation with the stone pavement only eroded in some places. Drainage along the road as well as small  masonry canals over streams are well visible.

What seems to be a rough path through the pastures of the mountainous area of Andalusia are in fact the remains of the impressive infrastructure that the Romans built about 2000 years ago.
